Every conversation about premium motion simulation eventually arrives at the same name. Qubic System. Specifically, their QS-220 linear actuators, the hardware that sits at the core of their most popular platforms and the reason people pay significantly more for a Qubic setup than for anything else on the market.

But what actually makes them different? Not the marketing version. The real, practical difference that you would feel underneath you if you sat in one tomorrow. And is the QS-V20, the complete 4DOF motion cockpit built around these actuators, genuinely worth the premium over a DOF Reality or eMotion platform at half the price?

Here is the honest breakdown.

What the QS-220 actuators actually are

Most consumer motion platforms use rotary motors. A motor spins, a mechanism converts that rotation into linear movement, and the platform tilts. It works, and platforms like the DOF Reality range prove that motor-driven motion can feel genuinely good for the money.

Qubic System takes a fundamentally different approach. The QS-220 uses industrial-grade linear actuators. There is no rotary-to-linear conversion. The actuator moves in a straight line, directly, with no gearboxes, no belts, no intermediate mechanism between the motor and the movement.

The practical result is speed, precision and silence. The QS-220 actuators respond at up to 900mm per second with acceleration up to 0.89G. In plain terms, the platform reacts to what is happening in the simulation almost instantly. The delay between the sim sending a telemetry signal and the platform physically moving is around 8 milliseconds. That is fast enough that your body registers the motion cue before your conscious brain processes the visual.

Why speed and latency matter more than you think

Here is the part that does not show up in spec sheets but changes the experience completely.

When you hit a kerb in iRacing or fly through turbulence in DCS, the event is brief. A kerb strike lasts a fraction of a second. A turbulence bump is a quick impulse. If the platform takes 30 or 40 milliseconds to react, the visual event has already passed by the time the physical cue arrives. Your brain registers it as a disconnect rather than a confirmation.

Who the QS-V20 is actually for

The QS-V20 is not the right platform for everyone. It starts at around £19,990 in the UK, which is four to five times the price of a DOF Reality H3 or an eMotion e3. The question is not whether it is better (it is), but whether it is better enough for a specific person to justify the price difference.

The QS-V20 is the right choice if:

You have already experienced motion simulation and you know it is a permanent part of your setup. This is not a first platform for someone curious about motion. It is the platform you buy when you have lived with a 2DOF or 3DOF system, you understand what motion adds, and you want the best engineering available for your home.

You are sensitive to latency and timing. Some people notice the difference between 8ms and 30ms response time. If you are one of them (and competitive sim racers and VR users often are), the QS-220 actuators deliver a quality of motion that lower-cost platforms cannot match.

You value build quality and longevity. Qubic platforms are built to industrial standards. The QS-220 actuators are the same technology used in professional simulation, theme park rides, and military training systems. They are designed to run for thousands of hours without degradation. If you are building a permanent installation, the engineering case for Qubic is strong.

You fly or race in VR. The native VR HeadWay compensation and the low-latency motion make the QS-V20 one of the strongest VR motion platforms available. The combination of fast physical cues and stable VR visuals creates an immersion depth that is hard to replicate with slower hardware.

The QS-V20 is not the right choice if:

You are new to motion simulation. Start with a DOF Reality H3 or an eMotion e2X. Learn what motion adds, decide whether it is for you, and then consider whether the Qubic tier is worth the step up. Spending £20,000 on your first motion platform without knowing whether you even like motion is not a good use of money.

Your budget is under £10,000. There is no shame in a DOF Reality or eMotion platform. They are genuinely good hardware that delivers real motion at a fraction of the cost. The QS-V20 is better, but the law of diminishing returns applies. The jump from static to a £3,000 DOF H3 is far more dramatic than the jump from a DOF H3 to a £20,000 QS-V20.

You want plug-and-play simplicity. The QS-V20 is a serious piece of engineering that benefits from proper setup, calibration, and a rigid mounting environment. It rewards attention and punishes shortcuts. If you want something you can unbox and start racing on in an hour, a simpler platform will serve you better.

The upgrade path that Qubic gets right

One thing Qubic does exceptionally well is modularity. The QS-220 actuators are the building block of their entire range. You can start with a 2DOF QS-220 set on your existing rig, add a QS-Pivot for 2.5DOF, expand to a full QS-V20 cockpit, add a QS-BT1 belt tensioner on top, or go all the way to the 6DOF QS-S25.

Every step uses the same actuator technology, the same controller, and the same software. You are not starting over each time you upgrade. You are extending a system. For someone who knows they want to arrive at a full motion cockpit eventually but cannot justify the full spend today, this upgrade path is genuinely well thought through.

The bottom line

The QS-220 actuators and the QS-V20 cockpit they power represent the current ceiling of what home motion simulation can deliver. The speed, the precision, and the build quality are a genuine step above everything else available to consumers. Whether that step justifies the price is a personal calculation that depends on your experience, your sensitivity, and your budget.
