The physical feedback reinforces what you see and hear, and it makes every landing feel like an event.
Climb and descent produce sustained heave effects that shift your body weight over time. Beginning a descent in MSFS or DCS produces a gradual sinking sensation through the heave axis that builds and holds. It is subtle, but it adds a sense of altitude and vertical movement that pitch angle alone does not provide.
Reducer Gearboxes on Four Axes
All four actuators use reducer gearboxes. The heave axis benefits enormously from this because heave effects are often slow and sustained. Turbulence oscillation needs to feel like air movement, not motor vibration. Touchdown compression needs to feel like hydraulic strut absorption, not an impact. H4R vs H3R
The H3R costs £3,235. The H4R costs £4,155. The £920 difference buys you a fourth actuator with a reducer gearbox delivering heave motion.
The H3R covers the three pilot-input axes: pitch, roll, yaw. You feel what the aircraft is doing in response to your control inputs. The H4R adds what the atmosphere is doing to the aircraft independently of your inputs. Turbulence, thermals, wind shear, and touchdown.
If your budget caps at the H3R, you are not missing the core flight experience. Pitch, roll, and yaw cover the fundamentals comprehensively. Heave is the atmospheric texture layer on top.
If your budget allows the H4R, heave adds the environmental immersion that makes flight simulation feel like you are airborne rather than sitting in a moving chair. For MSFS with realistic weather, DCS with dynamic environments, or any title where atmosphere and conditions are part of the experience, heave is transformative.
H4R vs H6R
The H6R adds two more axes for £6,790 (£2,635 more than the H4R). Full 6DOF hexapod-equivalent motion with all axes on reducer gearboxes. At that price point, the H6R is aimed at dedicated enthusiasts and semi-professional training setups. The H4R delivers 80% of the H6R's immersion at 61% of the price, which makes it the better value proposition for most home flight sim users.
Software and Flight Compatibility

The heave axis is configured within DOF Reality Manager with independent intensity and response settings. Most users start with heave at moderate intensity and increase it gradually as they calibrate to the sensation. Too much heave feels like riding an elevator. The DOF Reality H4R is the flight sim enthusiast's platform. Three axes cover what you do as a pilot. The fourth covers what the sky does to you. Heave is the axis that changes how flying feels at a fundamental level, adding atmospheric texture and landing feedback that no amount of pitch, roll, and yaw can reproduce.
At £4,155 it is a significant investment. But if flight simulation is your primary use and you want the platform that delivers the most convincing airborne experience short of a full 6DOF system, the H4R is where the money should go.
