How Much Space Do You Need for a Motion Simulator?

The platform fits. The question is whether the platform fits your room.

Before you spend £3,000 to £9,000 on a motion simulator, you need to know whether your spare bedroom, garage, or loft can handle it. Not just the footprint of the rig itself, but the clearance around it for the platform to tilt, the space behind for cable management, and the room in front for your screen or VR play area.

This guide gives you the exact measurements for every type of motion system we sell, so you can measure your room and know for certain before you order.

The General Rule: 2m x 1.5m Minimum

Most full motion platforms need roughly 2 metres in length and 1.5 metres in width of clear floor space. That includes the platform base, the cockpit frame, and enough clearance for the platform to tilt at maximum travel without hitting walls, desks, or furniture.

Add another 30cm clearance on each side if the platform is against a wall. Actuators extend outward during motion and you do not want them catching on skirting boards or furniture legs.

Ceiling height matters too. A seated driver on a motion platform at maximum pitch is roughly 1.5 metres from the floor to the top of the head. Standard UK ceiling height of 2.4 metres gives plenty of clearance. Low ceilings in loft conversions (below 2 metres) may be tight with a full-frame platform.

Space by Platform Type

Seat Movers (DOF Reality M2, ProSimu Motion Seat)

Seat movers are the most compact option. The motion mechanism sits underneath your existing seat and adds roughly 15 to 20cm of height. The footprint is your existing rig footprint plus nothing. If your current setup fits in the room, a seat mover fits in the room.

The DOF Reality M2 measures 60 x 45 x 35cm and weighs 33kg. The ProSimu Motion Seat is similarly compact. Neither changes your rig's floor footprint.

Minimum room size: Whatever your current rig needs. No additional space required.

Actuator Systems (SIMRIG SR1/SR2/SR3, Qubic QS-210/QS-220, ProSimu P3MP/P5MP)

Actuator systems bolt to your existing aluminium profile rig. The actuators mount at the corners and lift the rig. Your footprint stays the same but the rig now tilts, so you need clearance around it.

The SIMRIG SR2 adds roughly 10cm of height at rest and tilts the rig up to 5 to 8 degrees in each direction. At maximum tilt, the edge of your rig moves roughly 10 to 15cm from its resting position.

Minimum room size: Your current rig footprint plus 30cm clearance on all sides. Typically 2m x 1.5m total.

Full Platforms (DOF Reality H3/H4/H6, ProSimu T1000 range)

Full platforms include their own cockpit frame and are the largest systems. The DOF Reality H3 ships in two boxes: 94 x 38 x 28cm and 80 x 60 x 25cm. Assembled, the platform footprint is roughly 1.8m x 1.2m.

The ProSimu T1000 3M is similar in footprint. The DOF Reality H6 with 6DOF is slightly wider due to the additional actuators.

Minimum room size: 2.5m x 2m with clearance. A standard UK single garage (roughly 3m x 6m) is more than enough. A spare bedroom (typically 3m x 3m) works comfortably for any single-platform setup.

Commercial and Hexapod Systems (Qubic QS-V20, QS-S25, QS-S35)

The Qubic QS-S25 hexapod requires a dedicated space. The platform base is roughly 1.5m x 1.5m but the six actuators extend in all directions during full 6DOF motion. Allow 3m x 3m minimum for a hexapod system with full range of motion.

Floor Considerations

Motion platforms push force into the floor. On a concrete garage floor this is not an issue. On a wooden suspended floor in an upstairs bedroom, vibration transfer to the room below is a concern.

A thick rubber isolation mat underneath the platform handles most vibration transfer. ProSimu platforms are the exception because their PRS200 actuators never contact the floor during motion, making them suitable for upstairs rooms without any isolation.

Carpet is fine. Hard floor is fine. Just add a rubber mat for vibration isolation regardless of surface. Costs £30 to £50 and makes a genuine difference.

Triple Monitors vs VR: The Space Difference

Triple monitors add roughly 1.5m of width to your setup (three 27 to 32 inch screens on a stand). That means your total room width requirement goes from 1.5m to roughly 2.5 to 3m.

VR eliminates the screen entirely. Your motion rig footprint is all you need. If space is the constraint, VR with motion is significantly more compact than triples with motion. The Pimax Dream Air at 170g paired with a motion platform gives you full immersion in the smallest possible room footprint.

Room Layout Tips

Keep 50cm behind the rig. You need access to the back of the platform for cable management, actuator maintenance, and getting in and out of the seat. Pushing a motion rig flat against a wall makes everything harder.

Power outlet within 2m. Motion platforms draw 500 to 750W. You need a standard UK 13A socket within cable reach. An extension lead is fine but avoid running it across walkways.

Hard floor or mat underneath. Easier to level the platform and reduces vibration transfer.

Ventilation matters. A PC, three monitors, and a motion platform in a small room generate significant heat. A garage or well-ventilated room is more comfortable for long sessions than a small bedroom with the door closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a motion simulator upstairs?

Yes, with the right platform. ProSimu systems are designed for this. Their actuators never contact the floor during motion so vibration transfer is minimal. For other platforms, a rubber isolation mat reduces vibration significantly. Avoid putting a heavy 6DOF hexapod upstairs, the combined weight of platform, rig, and driver (150kg+) is better on a ground floor.

Will a motion platform fit in a single garage?

Easily. A UK single garage is roughly 3m x 6m which fits any platform with room to spare. Most garage setups use roughly half the length, leaving the rest for storage or a workbench.

Do I need a dedicated room for a motion simulator?

Not necessarily, but it helps. Motion rigs are heavy and not easy to move once set up. If you are sharing the room with other furniture, make sure the platform has clear space around it and nothing will be hit when the rig tilts. A dedicated corner of a large room works as well as a dedicated room.
