Seat Mover vs Full Motion Platform — The Honest Comparison
Share

One of the most common questions from sim racers considering motion for the first time is whether to go with a seat mover or a full motion platform. Both deliver genuine physical feedback. Both dramatically improve the sim racing experience. But they are fundamentally different products and the right choice depends entirely on what you already have and what you want to feel.
What is a seat mover?
A seat mover moves the seat only. The wheel, pedals and screens stay completely static. The seat — usually mounted on a set of actuators — moves in sync with the car telemetry, pressing you into the bolsters during cornering, tipping you forward under braking and pushing you back under acceleration. Products: eMotion Simulators eSeat, eSeat+.
What is a full motion platform?
A full motion platform moves the entire rig as one unit. Seat, steering wheel, pedals and screens all tilt and rotate together. Because everything moves relative to your body, the sensation is closer to the experience of sitting in a real car. Products: DOF Reality H2, DOF Reality H3, DOF Reality H4, DOF Reality H6, eMotion e2, eMotion e3.
The sensation difference
The most important difference between the two is what happens under heavy braking. In a seat mover, the seat tips forward but the wheel stays in place. Your body moves towards the static wheel. In a full platform, the entire rig noses down together — the sensation is more intuitive because it more closely mirrors what actually happens in a real car.
The cost and compatibility difference
Seat movers are generally easier to integrate with an existing rig. The eMotion eSeat sits underneath your existing seat and connects to your existing cockpit. You do not need to buy a new rig.
From a cost perspective, the eMotion eSeat starts from £2,514. The DOF Reality H3 full platform starts from £2,843. The DOF Reality H2 is the most affordable full platform entry point at £2,369.
Which should you buy?
Buy a seat mover if you have an existing cockpit you want to keep, you have limited floor space, or you specifically want the UK-made build quality of an eMotion product.
Buy a full platform if you want the most immersive motion sensation, you are building a new rig from scratch, or you want the best value entry point to motion simulation.
