The H3 is the most popular motion platform DOF Reality makes. It hits the sweet spot of price, performance and capability that makes it the right recommendation for the majority of people stepping into motion simulation for the first time. Then the H3R arrives and the question becomes: what is different, why does it exist, and do I need it?
The answer depends entirely on what you do with your rig. Here is the straight comparison.
What is the same
Everything structural. The H3 and H3R use the same steel frame, the same three motors, the same mounting points, the same footprint, and the same 3DOF axes of motion: pitch, roll, and a third axis. They look identical sitting next to each other. The build quality, the weight capacity, the power requirements, and the assembly process are all the same.
The software is the same. Both work with SimTools and support the same sim titles: iRacing, Assetto Corsa, ACC, MSFS, X-Plane, DCS, rFactor 2, and the rest. There is no software restriction that limits one variant to racing or the other to flight. Both platforms will physically work with any supported sim.
The price difference is modest. The H3R costs a few hundred pounds more than the H3, reflecting the additional hardware. It is not a different product tier. It is a different configuration of the same tier.
What is different
One thing. And it matters.
The H3R has a reducer gearbox fitted to each of the three motors. That is the entire physical difference between the two platforms. The gearbox sits between the motor and the drive mechanism, and it changes how the motor delivers its movement.
The standard H3 motor drives directly. It is fast, responsive, and slightly coarse at very low speeds. This is perfect for sim racing because racing motion is fast and punchy. Kerb strikes, quick direction changes, hard braking, traction loss. These are rapid events that benefit from a motor that reacts quickly and aggressively. The slight coarseness at low speed is irrelevant because the motor rarely operates at low speed in a racing context.
The H3R motor drives through the reducer gearbox. The gearbox smooths out the motor's output at low speeds, producing motion that is more fluid and controlled when the platform is moving slowly. This is what flight simulation demands. A gentle bank into a long turn. A slow pitch adjustment on approach. The subtle roll correction holding a heading in a crosswind. These are slow, sustained movements where the standard motor's coarseness becomes noticeable and the gearbox eliminates it.
In practical terms: the H3 is sharp and immediate. The H3R is smooth and refined. Both are 3DOF. Both are capable. The difference is in the character of the motion, not the amount of it.
Why this difference matters
The distinction between sharp and smooth maps directly onto the difference between racing and flying.
Sim racing is a series of rapid physical events. You brake hard, turn in, hit the apex, power out, clip a kerb, correct a slide. Each of these is a quick burst of motion lasting fractions of a second. The H3's direct motor drive delivers these cues with speed and energy. The platform feels alive and reactive, which is exactly what a racing driver wants underneath them.
Flight simulation is a series of sustained physical states. You bank into a turn and hold the bank for ten seconds. You pitch up into a climb and hold the climb for thirty seconds. You descend on approach and the pitch changes gradually over a minute. These slow, continuous movements are where the H3's direct motor can feel slightly stepped or mechanical, because the motor is making tiny adjustments at low speed and each adjustment is individually perceptible.
The H3R's gearbox smooths these micro-adjustments into a continuous fluid motion. The individual motor steps disappear into a single clean movement. The platform feels like it is flowing rather than stepping. For flight, this is a meaningful improvement in realism and comfort.
The crossover question
Most people who ask about the H3 vs H3R are trying to work out whether they can get away with one platform for both racing and flying. The honest answer is yes, with a compromise either way.
If you mostly race and occasionally fly: buy the H3. The direct drive is better for racing and perfectly adequate for casual flight. You will notice the motor stepping slightly during slow flight manoeuvres if you pay attention, but it will not ruin the experience. Most pilots who fly occasionally on a racing-focused rig never think about it.
If you mostly fly and occasionally race: buy the H3R. The gearbox smoothing is better for flight and the platform still handles racing well. The gearbox slows the motor's top-end response fractionally, which means the very sharpest kerb strikes and snap direction changes are marginally less crisp than the standard H3. In practice, very few people notice this difference during racing. The H3R is a perfectly good racing platform that happens to be an excellent flight platform.
If you split your time genuinely 50/50: this is the hard one. Neither variant is wrong. The H3 gives you better racing at the cost of slightly rougher flight. The H3R gives you better flight at the cost of marginally less razor-sharp racing. If pushed, most 50/50 users end up happier with the H3R because the flight smoothing is a more noticeable improvement than the racing sharpness loss. But it is close enough that either choice is defensible.
If you only race: the H3, without question. The gearbox adds cost and removes a fraction of the top-end sharpness for a benefit you will never use.
If you only fly: the H3R, without question. The gearbox is specifically designed for the slow-motion cues that define the flight experience.
What about DCS fast jets?
This is the edge case people worry about. DCS combat flying involves aggressive manoeuvring: high-G turns, rapid rolls, hard pulls. Does the H3R's gearbox smoothing hurt the experience in a fighter cockpit?
Honest answer: not really. DCS fast jet flying is aggressive compared to GA flying in MSFS, but it is still dramatically slower than sim racing. A 7G turn in an F-18 lasts seconds, not milliseconds. The H3R handles it comfortably. Where the standard H3 might feel slightly more visceral during the most aggressive combat manoeuvring, the H3R delivers a smoother overall experience that most DCS pilots prefer, especially during the long transits, aerial refuelling, and precision approaches that make up the majority of a DCS session.
If you fly DCS exclusively and you want maximum aggression during air combat manoeuvring, the standard H3 is a legitimate choice. If you fly DCS alongside MSFS or X-Plane, the H3R is the better all-round flight platform.
The VR factor
Both the H3 and H3R work well with VR headsets. Motion plus VR is one of the most compelling combinations in simulation because the physical motion cues reduce the sensory mismatch that causes VR sickness.
For VR flight sim specifically, the H3R has a slight edge. The smooth, continuous motion produced by the gearbox aligns more naturally with the slow visual rotation of a banking aircraft in VR. The standard H3's micro-stepping at low speed can occasionally create a subtle visual-to-physical mismatch in VR that the H3R avoids. It is not dramatic, but for pilots who are sensitive to VR discomfort, the H3R is the safer choice.
For VR sim racing, both variants are equally good. The fast, punchy racing cues overwhelm any low-speed smoothness difference, and neither platform causes VR issues during racing that the other avoids.
